  • AHURI final report - Pathways into and within social housing

    This is a final report from a study with the principle aim of charting a range of pathways into and within the current Australian social housing system at a time of significant changes to the sector, including the expansion of community housing, the introduction of common access systems in a number of states, and increased targeting of social housing towards those in greatest need. It developed a better understanding of the various ways by which people in different places and with different abilities, desires and needs, access social and affordable housing.

    Tony Gilmour and Vivienne Milligan have authored this recently released article that examines the diverse ways in which the leading not-for-profit providers in Australia have responded to opportunities from private finance, a tax credit scheme, stock transfers, planning incentives and an economic stimulus package, using the concept of organisational hybridity. Coverage of hybridity includes both established housing providers and emergent third sector organisations including finance consolidators, development consortia and cross-subsidisation vehicles.

  • National Affordable Housing Exchange Announcements

    CHFA’s National Affordable Housing Exchange to be held in Sydney on the 26-27 July 2012 is drawing closer. We are pleased to announce that Rod Fehring from Australand will be presenting the Keynote Address on Thursday 26 July. After being unable to speak as planned at last year’s Exchange due to a bike accident, we’re pleased that Rod is able to attend this year.

    Also speaking on the first day of the Exchange is the Hon Pru Goward, NSW Minister for Housing who will be addressing the Exchange during the afternoon.

  • 2012 Homelessness Research Conference Report Available

     The inaugural Homelessness Research Conference provided an opportunity to hear from many of Australia’s leading researchers, to not only get a sense of what research is currently underway and what research methods and approaches are being used, but also to consider what further homelessness research is needed. The conference also heard keynote presentations from international experts Professor Dennis Culhane, School of Social Policy and Practice, University of Pennsylvania (USA) and Dr Volker Busch-Geertsema, Chair, European Observatory on Homelessness (Germany).

  • CHFA Media Release - Housing: Missing in action in Federal Budget

    The Community Housing Federation of Australia (CHFA) expressed disappointment that tonight’s Federal Budget, which emphasised assisting Australian families, did not address the single biggest household expense—housing.

    “While we are pleased to see extra payments for low income families to help meet school costs and other living expenses, the lack of affordable housing is taking a heavy toll on thousands of low and moderate income families,’ said Carol Croce, CHFA Executive Director.

    The NSW Federation has today released its latest good practice resource for the community housing sector. This resource supports providers in playing a lead role in developing and implementing strategies for community engagement and community building. It provides a context for considering best approaches to engaging local communities in community development activities, including in tenant economic engagement.

    Livable Housing Australia (LHA) is the lead national, not-for profit organisation for livable housing design in Australia. Established in June 2011, LHA’s primary objective is to champion everyday Australians, the residential building and property industry and all levels of Government to adopt livable housing features in all new homes being built in Australia. It is supported by industry, government and lead consumer organisations across the country.

  • CHL initiate homelessness support program

    National community housing provider Community Housing Ltd (CHL) have recently launched a new pilot program which identifies vulnerable households exiting the homelessness service system and places them into long term housing. According to CHL the program aims to help people who have escaped homelessness to avoid being stuck in a cycle of temporary, transitional or inappropriate housing.
